Unless you have been living in a cave these last two years, you know that money has been harder to come by. The arts industry is not exempt from this! Under the new Conservative Party majority, there has been much speculation that the Canada Council for the Arts will have to make budgetary cutbacks of 5% - 10% , which could put the squeeze on theatre companies.
Amidst cutback fears, however, there are still government programs that theatre companies can take advantage of. The Digital Techno...

This is a guest post by Terri Dans, a menswear cutter who has worked at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival for 25 Years. This article will be useful for aspiring cutters and actors, who need advice on properly taking their measurements, alike.
Building costumes requires a number of important pieces of information:
design, fabrics, a timeline, and of course, measurements of the person who will wear the costume.
Up to date and accurate measurements are essential for the cutter, whose job is ... Continue reading ...

It was recently tabled at a Toronto City Council meeting that the city should consider the sale of it's civic theatre venues. Specifically, they are the Toronto Centre for the Arts, the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts and the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.
Sale of these venues would save money in the annual budget, but potentially displace many arts and community groups, including such distinguished companies as The Canadian Stage Company. However, the current lack of large scale prod...

A couple of weeks ago, I saw some production stills from the set of Rigoletto at the Canadian Opera Company. Today on their Facebook page, they posted a video of the change over to Iphigenia. I find this equally as impressive. Check out the video after the break!

This is a very interesting piece of installed art that could theoretically be implemented in on a stage as a rain curtain. It can create some very intricate patterns. Have a look!

The 2011 Atlantic Fringe Festival closed their final show this past Sunday. After a tumultuous beginning, this years edition of the festival ran smoothly. Organizers reported that the 35 productions brought in revenues of over $45,000, which is an increase of %108 over the last year.

The story behind this years Atlantic Fringe Festival is the essence of what the theatre industry in Canada is all about. With little more than a passion for theatre and a lot of chutzpah, a group of volunteers stepped up and saved this years edition of the festival.
Ken Pinto was the Recognized Agent (Artistic Director) for the Atlantic Fringe Festival for 20 seasons. He founded the Atlantic chapter of the Fringe in 1991 and led the growth of the festival for another 19 years. However, the Fe...

Have you ever wondered how high end in ear monitors are manufactured? Engadget Editor Darren Murph shared a tour he had at Westone Labs and documents the creation of a set of monitors from ear canal cast to final delivery.
I was surprised at the level of attention that each pair of these gets. Even though I knew they were custom made, I thought there would be a lot more factory production style work that went into them.
Check out the video, I found it quite interesting.

Here in Halifax, it has been a stormy week. We also just had a concert festival, Mfest here. This festival reminded me of the terrible stage collapses that have happened in the last few years, most recently last month in Ottawa at the Bluesfest main stage.

Many of us went to school to study our chosen line of work. Some of us did not. But all of us will learn more once we start our careers than any school can teach. We learn through on the job training, professional development, experiences and failures. An often underappreciated teaching technique, however, is mentoring.
Aside from being a great way to pass on knowledge, mentoring has some other practical advantages that make it worth the effort. It is low cost, helps build a professional n...
